Below are some pictures of the 3 classes that were held over 2 days. As you can see, everyone had a great time.
Last weekend we celebrated another great annual show. 35th one with some great carvings. I have posted a few pictures here for you to critique. Gerald put together a stellar show and 2 day carving class. I am sure there will be more to come. This year's show was held in a vacant store in the Frisco Mall Shopping Center, Rogers on Walnut St. Below are some pictures of the 3 classes that were held over 2 days. As you can see, everyone had a great time. The next set of pictures are from the show. Now was that a great show or what???
Here is another jaw dropping site. These are carvings not taxidermy mounts.
http://www.thewildlifegallery.com/taxidermy/photos_sculptures_by_earl_martz.html One-of-a-kind showpieces by artist Earl Martz. As a professional of more than 30 years, Martz has been evolving a background of painting and carving to combine abstract shapes in found wood and sculpting technique, to create with impressionistic flair, his strikingly realistic fascination in animals. Here is an excellent site for seeing how to do airbrushing. As the article states, it is not easy. You can see the result of the demo, a decoy smoothie duck at the left. It is very informative and is in 2 parts. Some real helpful hints. Thanks Daniel Montano. http://www.worldofdecoys.com/2014-pacific-flyway-painting-demo-by-daniel--feathers--montano.html http://www.worldofdecoys.com/redhead-hen-frond-part-2-by-daniel--feathers--montana.html Also if you are interested in getting started here is an excellent site for an airbrush and supplies at discounted prices. They also have specials from time to time. http://www.bearair.com/ For more information on painting I have several you-tube videos listed under the Link tab all the way to the bottom. Let me know if you have additional information and I will post it. This is a great way to soften your painting. Charlie Wildfowl Carving Magazine is now in a digital format for your computer. Also on facebook, listing back issues and current information. If you scroll down far enough and you can get a highlighted back issue. But the best part is some content on special carvings and their creators.
Check it out if you are a bird carver. https://www.facebook.com/WildfowlCarving 90 photos on Ward World Competition. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.696501517078208.1073741840.412797175448645&type=1 We have a special friend here in NW Arkansas in Janet. Just noticed she has a how to instruction blog on her little hitty dolls. http://www.janetcordell.com/3/previous/2.html http://www.janetcordell.com/updatesblog.html Several of us have benefitted over the last 10 years to take some instruction at the old War Eagle Seminar and at her cabin. Always helpful and willing to keep us on track. Many times we have talked to her about an idea and she helped get patterns together. My RR Track sculpture was with her help. She has a class March 24-28 in Springfield MO at the Ozark woodcarving seminar there. If you are new to carving or an advanced carver Janet can help you get a step up. For those interested in some fine relief carvings you do not need to go further that Jerry's house to see some really nice work. Check out his web site for some eye opening work. http://jerrymifflinwoodcarving.com/ Be sure and look at all the display photos and you can get some idea of how he works. Pour your self another cup of coffee and enjoy. Here is an opportunity to see a lot of pictures from the Cajun completion. A lot of decoys but keep going down the page and you will see some songbirds too. Also some miniature boats.
http://371004202582369312.weebly.com/2013-cajun-heritage-festival.html I enjoyed seeing all the techniques used to finish the decoys. Hope you enjoyed this Louisiana tour of the decoy carving world. Here are a couple of pictures on the on-going process of finishing out the Redtail Hawk. I have added a 2" thick walnut base under the 1/4" one earlier. Here are a couple of tips; 1) when you wet the sand and glue mix the 1/4" plywood will warp, and become concave around the log that I screwed it to. That is the reason I advanced to attaching to walnut base. I glued it using a commercial calk type glue and clamped it in place to set. So much stress on the board that it pulled up some, then I used a large head metal scrrew, screwed it through the sand into the walnut. This worked well. Simple; covered the screw with a ridge of sand and proceeded to water application. 2) I wanted a little movement in the water so I tried to make a slight ripple. It worked pretty good, but I need to work on the technique some. In the past I have used hot melt glue to make the ripple then poured the resin over it to hide the glue look. Problem is the glue is somewhat cloudy and really shows up through to glass clear resin. I think I will add some more water on one end and a little to the back to finish it out. Now on to carving the 6" Skink lizard and the yellow lady slippers. To be continued. |
